Mr. Ludo Campbell-Reid

Design Champion of Auckland

Representing Mayor Len Brown, Ludo Campbell-Reid is Auckland Council’s first ever Design Champion.Auckland Council is the largest Unitary Authority in Australasia with assets over $32B and an annual operating budget over $3B.

 

Ludo isaccountable for design excellence in council’s plans and projects, working with the private sector to achieve exemplary design outcomes and promoting a design-led city agenda within the council and the wider community.

 

Ludo developed Auckland’sfirsturbandesignframework,“DesigningGreatPlaces forourPeople” (2007), apeople-focusedapproach advocatingapro-pedestrian, human-scaled cityreflecting its unique South Pacific location.Projects to unlock thewaterfront for public recreation, the revitalization ofinner city public spaces, the introduction of the pioneering “shared space” programmeand the redevelopment of Auckland’s Art Gallery (winner of the 2013 World Architecture Festival Building of the Year)have transformed the city,epitomising the success of this approach.

 

Before moving to New Zealand in 2006, Ludo was CEO of Urban Design London, a partnership established by the 33 London Boroughs, The Mayor of London, Transport for London and the former Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) to lift design quality across London. Earlier, as Senior Urban Designer at the London Borough of Tower Hamlets he was responsible for providing ongoing development, master-planning and urban design advice at Canary Wharf, London’s 2nd financial district.

 

Working in Cape Townduring the 1990s, Ludo was a member of the master-planning team for the V&A Waterfront developmentand wasChief Urban Designer and Technical Sporting Adviser for the Cape Town 2004 Olympic Bid Company.
