A Snapshot of Taipei

City of Design

The 2011 International Design Alliance (IDA) Congress, held in Taipei, was a great success. With this solid foundation, Taipei won the bid to hold the 2016 World Design Capital, which provided an opportunity to upgrade municipal facilities and infrastructure and improve quality of life through effective economic development projects. Taipei's standing as a World Capital of Design will help us to continue to roll out urban development strategies and heighten the international impact of the city’s soft power through design.

City of Culture

Taipei is also a city of culture. A wide range of cultural events and festivals take place here: Taipei Lantern Festival, Chinese Character Festival, Taipei Film Festival, Taipei Arts Festival, Taipei Fringe Festival and more. A number of films have also been shot in Taipei, including the work of internationally famous directors Ang Lee, Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Tsai Ming-Liang. The most recent instance is Luc Besson’s new movie-“Lucy.”

City of Sports

In order to encourage citizens to use bicycles rather than motor vehicles for travelling short distances, Taipei City government collaborated with Giant and set up the Taipei Bike Sharing System Service Plan, also known as "YouBike". Taipei will also serve as host city for Velo-city Global 2016, the first time Velo-city Global has been hosted in Asia. An estimated 1,000 representatives from 50 countries are expected to visit Taipei, which bodes well for the future of cycling here. In addition, Taipei has been chosen to host the 2017 Summer Universiade. 12,000 participants from over 160 countries are expected to take part in the twelve-day sports event.

City of Charm

The Taipei Metropolitan Area is served by a sophisticated mass rapid transit system and by Taiwan High-Speed Rail. Congress delegates can easily experience Taipei at an amazingly affordable cost and enjoy Taipei Metro’s cleanness, comfort and unrivaled convenience.

During the congress, one can take advantage of one's stay in Taipei to explore this beautiful and vibrant city. Taipei is a world of fascinating contrasts, a wonderful cocktail of modernity and tradition. The soaring Taipei 101 tower, an inspirational work of modern architecture, is well complemented by the prestigious National Palace Museum, plush 24-hour bookstores and a wide array of savoury delicacies at stalls and restaurants. In Beitou, just a few minutes away from the heart of the city, you can let go of the cares of the world in mineral-rich hot springs nestling in lush foothills skirting the Taipei Basin.
