Introduction:
The exhibition organized jointly by the United Daily News Group and Bureau of the Shanghai World Expo Coordination ran from October 21 to December 11 at the Greater Taichung International Expo Center, next to the Taichung High Speed Rail Station. The 52-day exhibition attracted over 630,000 visitors (in person-times), making the record of 1.3 million person-times while combined with the figure from the Taipei session. As per requests from visitors, the organizer is examining the possibility of continuing the exhibition down to the southern part of Taiwan.

According to the estimates of the organizer, the number of visitors hit 37,000 person-times yesterday, which outshines the highest single-day record of 21,256 person-times in Taipei. The record of 631,642 person-times during the entire 52-day exhibition in Taichung also beats the figure of the first 52 days combined in the Taipei session by nearly 200,000.

Moving of the Riverside Scene at Chingming Festival, an artwork both delicate and magnificent, is a combination of the ancient civilization and modern technology. It depicts the lives of common people. During the exhibition, full support and assistance have come from local governments of Taipei city, New Taipei city, Taichung city, Miaoli county, Changhua county, Nantou county, Yunlin county, Jiayi city and Jiayi county.

When the exhibition arrived in Taichung, celebrities in the political, business and cultural arenas gathered to appreciate the artwork. Distinguished guests included First Lady Chou Mei-Ching, Mayoress of Taichung city Shao Siao-Ling, Nantou county magistrate Lee Chao-Ching, Chairman of Taiwan Cooperative Bank Liu Teng-Cheng and aesthetics scholar Jiang Xun. Yu Kuang-Chung, one of the most renowned writers in Taiwan, even referred to the exhibitions as the best lesson on the history of the Chinese culture.

Moving of the Riverside Scene at Chingming Festival was regarded as the most precious exhibit in the China Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. It took Crystal CG two years to create this artwork. Based on the 25cm tall, 5m wide Along the River During the Chingming Festival painted by Chang Tse-Tuan in North Sung Dynasty, the artwork is magnified by 30 times before being projected onto a 6m tall, 110m wide screen. With the aid of modern technology, the classic painting dated more than nine centuries ago is “alive”, fully demonstrating details of the bustling and flourishing Bianjing, the capital city of North Sung Dynasty.

Along the River During the Chingming Festival is one of the most well-known paintings in the Chinese culture. The earliest version was created by painter Chang Tse-Tuan of North Sung Dynasty and is now among the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing. At the core of the delicate boundary painting technique used by Chang is cavalier perspective, by which the figures and scenes are beautifully depicted. The painting describes the prosperity of the capital city of North Sung Dynasty and the beautiful scenery alongside the Bian River. The figures, animals, buildings and carts look like real. With creative use of digital technology, the electronic version of Along the River During the Chingming Festival fully embodies the essence of this classic painting, making your visit to the exhibition extremely rewarding.

All the features of the original painting are preserved in the electronic version, including streets, boats, trees and buildings. What makes the electronic painting unique is the moving features—boats moving forward in the flowing water, boat trackers calling out loud, people walking about and groceries laid out for sale. At the bottom of the massive scroll, a river that can pass for a real one meanders on, as if the actual scenes of Bianjing from nine centuries ago are right before the visitors’ eyes.

Although many are already familiar with the scenes depicted in this national treasure, but to actually see the porters walk and drink, and to hear the boat trackers sing by the riverside, is thrilling beyond description. After the exhibitions of mammoth, chocolate and Marc Chagall, Moving of the Riverside Scene at Chingming Festival is yet another high quality exhibition that the United Daily News Group present to the people of central Taiwan.
